It depends on what your needs are. I usually start a new culture with about 50 to 100 flies. I start a new culture about every 10-14 days. Just watch it for a boom of flies, that means the first eggs have hatched. Right after the first eggs hatch is the best time to start a new culture, these are the strongest flies. Also, if you let it get too crowded the culture will crash itself.
