Deffenbachia is poisonous IF EATEN (most of these sites are also talking about cats and sometimes dogs as well, keep that in mind). I worried over the fact that I have it in my tanks, and then I read that so many herpers keep them in their tanks as well. I have had the same dieffenbachia plant in my tanks for FOUR years, it is fine, they are fine. Would I recommend it for herbivorous herps? No, because I don't KNOW that it wont hurt them. Would I recommend it for frogs and other herps that don't chew on the plants in their tanks? ABSOLUTELY. It grows very very well in a vive, and it is extremely hardy. The ones in my CWD tank have holes in the leavers from his sharp claws (dragons are notorious for trampling their foliage) and the plant is still fine. The leaves aren't even dying. You can even cut a piece off of a leaf and the leaf will not die. The part that they are saying is poisonous is the sap that comes out if you cut it. If you want to be careful not to leave it seeping sap after you prune it, then do that, but I have never had a problem with it, all my herps love the plant. My cats have even chewed on leaf clippings with no problem. Now that I know it is toxic to the cats I am more careful with it, but there was never any problem with it before. Lots of things that are toxic to one type of animal aren't toxic to other types, and sadly there are very few resources available that list the plants that are toxic to herps. Go ahead and put it in the tank, the frog will likely love it. You can root the clippings too and have even more plants. It roots very well.
