Default Carnivorous Plants

A new story entry has been added:

Carnivorous Plants

Quote:
I recently purchased some pitcher plants for my viv. Most of you would know that pitcher plants are carnivorous and that they eat insects. Well I wanted to know whether or not you need to feed them and if so, which bugs do you feed them?

Check out this website. The Carnivorous Plant FAQ: How often should I feed my plant?
I've always had bad experiences with venus fly traps. I do think they need to have good soil and a good habitat before you do anything. Carn. plants do seem to mildew easily. I would strongly suggest if you feed it, try to feed to animals you buy from a breeder and not from a patio porch (i did that once)
Good luck with the pitcher. Got any pics?

I have a couple pictcher plants in my viv's and really as long as your feeding your frogs, then there is no need to feed them, the acess flys/springtails, end up in the pitchers.

It should be noted that there are both tropical and temperate pitcher plants. The temperate pitchers (and venus flutraps) will *need* a hibernation period in the winter since they have adapted to growing in the standard North American climate.

Also, carnivorous plants don't require *good* soil. They require very *poor* soil in that they can't tolerate the nutrients generally present. Carnivorous plants also need watered with either rain water, reverse osmosis water or distilled water. The minerals, chemicals and salts in most tap water will kill them.
