Looks like a Panther Chameleon Furcifer pardalis to me and yes it is for real. Use Google images and look at some of the great colors they can display.

definitely panther chameleon... no doubt about it... he's on my want list... along with an iguana (which i will probably get from a local rescue when it's time)... they've been housed together successfully. that color is a result of breeding although some are not far from that in the wild during mating season.

New pet, on top of the trio of Russian tortoises that I am getting

Are the captive bred Panthers as nasty tempered as WC ones? I saw Steve Irwin getting the crap bit out of him by one, lol, just yesterday in fact (same day I found the pic) but I didn't realize they were the same species (because of the colors.)

Chameleons are not an animal to be handled they are more like aquarium fish, look but don't touch. Chams tend to stress out pretty easily and once they stress they go own hill pretty quick. Even their own reflection will stress them.
I don't have any because there is no place in my house that is peaceful enough not to stress one out.

As a general rule, I do not handle my herps. Even my tortoises. Especially my aquatics. The only time any handling is done is when it is necessary, for baths for the torts, or cage cleanings, or tear downs.

I recognize that they are reptiles, not puppies and kittens I wish more people realized that They really do not like to be handled, although they may tolerate it.

I just wanted to know if I was going to reach into the viv and get chomped on, lol. I am thinking of doing some sort of hanging viv if I get one.

I used to have a Tokay gecko, and he was a nasty customer, but I loved him anyway.
