I would guess its diet that is keeping him unhappy. Chameleons are a very hard animal to feed because they get picky at times. You need to try out different types of foods and alternate them with your crix. I supplied my veiled with a diet consisting of meal worms, butter worms, wax worms, giant horned worms, hissing cockroaches, moths, mealworms and crickets. Feeding any of it for too long, or without change would end up in denying it though.
Also, some veiled chameleons have the desire to eat vegetation. Offer some greens and grapes every now and again. If they take to them, keep a steady supply in the cage for grazing.
What temps and humidity do you keep the cage? Is there a good gradient of temperature? How big is your cage?
There is no reason a veiled would feel sad for loosing its mate. They are totally solitary and it actually works in the opposite manner. Unless you have a large cage, multiple animal housig is normally overly stressful on veiled chameleons, usually ending in death of one or both animals.
Hi, at the moment i'm battling with the temp and not so bad the humidity, but i'm going to the extreme i will have two seperate basking lights and an infrared with that all i would have a termoregulator. the terarium is about 1350x600x600. another thing is what is the best way to create a drip system. i'm not home everyday so i need something thats is easy and quick and effective. so please any help with that would be appreciated.
with the vegetation what sort of greens is safe for vaileds (I want the specific names) cause i don't want to get him angry at me. at the moment i have normal branches and plastic leaves on it what is the best way to look at that and what can i change
Im sorry for the delayed reply. I dont get on here too much any more. My job has taken off for the time being, I had to get rid of most of my animals, and Im about to have my first baby!!
Drip systems can be handled a number of different ways. Ive seen stuff as simple as a plastic bag with a hole in it, all the way up to using a reservior with a dosing pump (found at SW aquarium stores). I chose to use one of the standard types offered by exo terra. It was basically a plastig jug with a valve on the side to let water out. There was a little tube attached to the valve so I could direct the flow, and the valve allowed me to control how fast it dripped. I let it drip into a large ficus tree pot that was in the cage crossing leaves on the way down.
There are a bunch of different things that will be beneficial to a veiled, but the most common ones are mustard and collard greens. My veiled also liked green grapes. I almost always had a clip of collard greens in his cage, but would offer mustard greens and even romain lettuce (which isnt really beneficial except as a water source) on occasion. The lettuce is a good way to get them interested in vegetables, as it doesnt have a noxious taste.
Id like to see a pic of your set up, but as long as you have plenty of climbing areas that vary in width and height you should be fine. The vegetation also needs to offer ample protection, so he can "get away" from everythig if he feels frightened or if hes just not in the mood for company.
Thank you for your reply and congratulations on your baby. How many months before he/she comes into this wonderfull world.
Now back to the chameleons, I've found that my chameleon (Gogga) likes his mealworms, I haven't had the chance to get silkworms or anything other than crikets and mealworms. It was good laugh cause the one day I didn't have mealworms and gave him only crickets, he actually went to the dish I put it in and didn't see anything. He was so mad at me that he still doesn't want to come to me. I got him his mealworms and he eats about three mealworms a day. Is that too much?
Another thing that I'm worried about is that Gogga is active in the morning and about 2 o'clock in the afternoon he is already in his sleeping corner and already sleeping. Is that too early for him or rather is there something wrong with him (sick?)
I will post a photo of him and the terrarium as soon as possible. Maybe then you can give me advise on that?
Tell your wife congrats and enjoy him/her as much as you can. I've got a boy of two years old and his just a joy to have.
After reading this thread, my gut feeling is that your chameleon is dehydrated. This is just a guess going by what you said, I would have to know more about your set up and his actions to be sure. I would suggest giving him a few heavy days of misting and see if he starts to perk up. A heavy misting for 10 minutes about three times a day. Also I know a lot of people that will put their cham in the shower on a fake plant.
Just to let you know that one of the first signs of dehydration is lack of appetite and energy. Also look for slightly sunken in eyes and a thin tail, not bony. Also, I don't know what kind of basking light you have but it should be around 90, give or take a few, directly under it and about 80ish ambient temperature.
Here is a pic of my terrarium. It is about 90% done. I still need to add some moss on the floor and a couple of long nice branches for my soon to be chameleons. It is a 29g tank with a screen topper from Zoomed. It will work very nice for keeping the humidity up and also allowing for good airflow.
I still say you don't have enough plants and cover in the tank, dtown. Did you see how much cover Landon had in his tank? Shoot for something more like that.
