Talking 90 Gallon Vivarium

Ive decided to scrap the Table conversion I was doing and build a roughly 90 gallon viv. it will be 36"H X 24"L X 24"W, with a 2' tall stand.

It will have front opening doors like an exoterra, a small screen alont the top to keep the front clear, and an openable flap on the back of the to incase I need to get to things like plimbing or need to add pluming.

the little half oval on the top shows a place for pump and filter cords to come out

does this sound too big for PDFS?

The flap on top idea is too cool. I don't think its too big, so long as you can provide enough food. Thats a lot of fruit flies for that tank. Frogs are gonna have to be able to find them where ever they go. I want to build something along the lines of 36 tall, 48 long, 24 wide tank, put it on its side to make it a vertical, with front opening tank.
If yours comes out good, maybe I can look you up to see if you can make one for me. I like that top flap idea.

Thank you. I figure not only will I be able to access the back area but later dawn the road when I can afford a misting system I can simply remove this piec and buy one that has holes drilled where I want my nossles.

Here is the basic break down of pieces:
Bottom: 23 X 23 1/2" glass (strong bottom support)
Back: 24 X 36 3/8" Glass (since it wont be full of water I can save some $ here)
Sides: 23 X 36 3/8" Glass X2
Bottom-Front: 24 X 12 - 3/8" Glass
Doors: 12 X 16 3/8" Glass X2
Top-Front: 24 X 8 3/8" Glass
Top 24 X 4 Screen, 24 x 12 3/8" Glass fixed piece, 24 x 8 3/8" Glass flap.

When I get down the road with this will have all kind of questions on species, # of animal, plants and lights. more diagrams will follow and hopefully some pics too!

Did some looking around at AH Supply and when the time is right I will probably order:

2x55 Watt Brite kit $64.99
2 55 watt lights im thinking 7800k $18.99 ea. (on sale right now for 14.99 ea.)
24in black enclosure $34.99

come to just over $150.00 after shipping. I will have to save for it but im realy far away from needing the lights right now. Just tring to make it a clear image in my head. I can see the final product and let me just say SWEET!

How does this sound for lighting? I figure plants that need more lite will be arranged towards the top and less needy plants towards the bottom.

How well does that light work? if I can get a sutable light for $35 That will greatly help me budget the project!

I was also wondering if any one has info on where I could get moulding for around the base of the tank? Or how to make some? Ive been told from some Custom tank builders It may be dangerous not to have one on a tank this size even without being full of water it could pull the seams appart.

Apparently it works great and is a straigh steady beam that looses very little light with distance.

that light works great, just dont try and rewire it  my buddy tried a couple times to rewire it, so he didnt have to use the fixture...bad idea, almost had two fires. at least he was there for both incedents and got away wiht no injuries or losses (except the lights), but as far as using them in the housing, they work just fine. WalMart actually carries a similar one for $27, but its only 42w. ive been running of them over my 110, and theyve been doing just fine.

as far as your tank pulling apart at the seems, you dont need any molding (if you build it right. if you are dead set on it, you can contact oceanic or all-glass. i htink they both make 24" cubes, and get a piece of trim from them. you would just have to adjust your dimensions to fit it perfectly.

KevinS and i, are putting a display in an LPS this saturday. its 48x18x36, and has no molding top or bottom. it will probably end up with 4-5" of water in the bottom too.

Thank you. I got a major reality check from my brother in law the other day and it looks like this will be next years project. I was coplaining about taking the bus and spending over an hour to get to work and he said and how much is that tank going to cost? and how mucd do you have saved for a new car? then he reminded me him and my sister have been driving acrost town every week to take me shopping so I can eat. It all would have worked if it hadnt been for those medeling kids!!! Oh well it will all come along in time I guess. Give me an excuse to Use my now empty 29 Gal for Mossy frogs!

That's the Flourex bulb, they also now have a 100 Watt one at home depot, If you shop ebay's hydroponics section you can get a 200 Watter/ballast for even bigger/deeper tanks!
