Question D. auratus shy/bold?

For all you owners out there, are D. auratus (the Costa Rican green and black) very bold or shy? Care sheets I read elsewhere say both. I'm looking into a beginner species for my 20gallon when it's complete but I want an active and bold animal. Is this the species for me??

It is my experience in keeping four of these in the same 20 gal tank as froglets that the individual personalities vary. One or two, usually the larger ones, were more bold than the smaller. However, they usually arent too difficult to find, and as soon as you throw some fruit flies in they should immediately come out of hiding to eat. I have read both about these frogs as well, but it seems to vary by the different morphs for the level of boldness. I interned at the National Aquarium in Baltimore this summer and from my experience there, these frogs will hide as soon as you come into view. I think it is a matter of them getting used to your presence. In comparison to other species such as azureus or tinctorius which are very bold, auratus are shy. In my opinion they are a good species to start with and should be plenty active after a few weeks.

Costa Rican Green and Black tend to be the boldest of the auratus from my experience. With any frog, the higher humidity and the more possible hiding spots the more you will see the frog. It seems like less hiding spots would lead the frog to be out in the open more, but actually having a ton of options to scurry away to allows the frog to be bolder as he/she knows he/she can find a spot to hide quickly should anything come around. Also, frogs in high traffic areas tend to be bolder. They just get use to you.
