Default Irish frogs?!

hey guys, new man here! Ive been researching what frog to get like crazy and naturally i've ended up here with the crazy colours, so so cool !

So i guess i just have a few questions for you folks. Like whats the best beginner dart, or are they ok for noobs at all? And is it ok to mix types of dart within one viv?

And any other tips for a 'starter dart frog bloke' welcome!

Cheers folks!

oh oh ya and am i right to say that with a natural viv (small stones, covered with moss and pond area etc) you dont have to change the substrate? just water it to wash the moss and drain then replace the water?

With dart frogs you dont need to change the substrate. their Feces break down in the soil. with any Other frogs I know of you do. The Ammonia levels in other frogs feces is too high to break down and will build up.

From what I've seen in one of my vivariums, the spring tails do a nice job of breaking down the frog feces and drown crickets. I'm sure they contribute to replenishing the substrate fertility. I say this because I don't have a tank with darts yet, I just have green tree frogs and a mini umbrella tree, and after 2 years it's still doing exceptional.

I don't have to regularly break down my vives either. I do from time to time simply because I get tired of the way they look, but not because they substrate needs to be changed. You can tell if the substrate needs changing by the way it smells. If it smells like rich soil, that's fine, but when it starts getting a musty odor, then it is time to start planning to switch it out for new, which is a perfect time to rearrange things.

That is good information. I have never seen springtails in action. Thank you for your post.

I agree with Future, D. leucomelas are a good starter dart. I would highly recommend not mixing any darts. You should stick to same species in each in your tanks. It can be done, but in the Dendro world it is highly frowned upon. Anyone interested in darts should do a bit of reading before hand because they are very needy frogs.

Default Dart Frogs

Dendrobates Auratus , Azureus, Tincs are all good beginner dart frogs. They are very easy to take care of as long as you can supply the food that is required, as well as the right humidity and temperature requirements. Sinflspeed brings up a good point in not mixing. I was about to write it, but he beat me to it. ((:
