Default Failed RETF amplexus?

First of all, since I am new here, hello to everyone. Last night I noticed that a pair of my tree frogs were in amplexus. I watched them for about a half hour, but nothing unusual went on. I went to bed and woke up this morning and the male and female were separated and sleeping, but no eggs had been laid. Is this common? This is my first go around at breeding frogs. I read briefly somewhere that this can occur when the male is ready but the female is not. Is there anyway to encourage this behavior outside of raising the humidity and more frequent showers? Thanks in advance for your help.

Hello and welcome

i have never bred before, but were i get my frogs from he has a rain chamber, simulating tropical showers through out the day and night...

a rain chamber is a very simple and effective set up and works most times. the frogs are simply put in until spawning has occurd and are then put back into there normal viv. spawn is then put in a swet box and "incubated" until they hatch. you then have the lovely job of playing dad to the lil froglits.

it is the rainy season when most frogs bread so although increasing humidity helps it does not fully simulate the time of year. it is better to slowly increase the amounts of sprays so the humidity slightly raises over time, tricking the frogs into thinking the time of year is changing, day light hours will also differ and changes in temp. in an ideal world you need to creat an entire seasonal cycle.

Mine do that to me all the time also - Amplexus but no eggs - and they stay like that for a few days then separate. I saw eggs only once but nothing hatched. I pretty much ignore them doing that now.

knightly: Thanks for the advice. I built a rain chamber of sorts that is set to go off 5 times a day. The enclosure gets pretty soaked each time. They seem to enjoy it and call back and forth all night. I had also heard that it helps for them to go through a dryer season before the rainy season, so I went ahead and did that as well.

Green Ghost: Its reassuring to know that I'm not the only one this is happening to. How many frogs do you have together? I'm thinking about separating one of my females from the group to see if that encourages them(I have 2.2). I've heard that a higher male to female ration stimulates their breeding.

Thanks for the replies!

2 males per female is ideal, increase competition and gives the female a choice.

let us know how it goes, good sign if they are calling eachother....

Green Ghost,
I forgot to ask...how often do yours get into amplexus? Also, did you notice any difference between the times that they've been in amplexus but not laid any eggs compared to the time that they did?

They're in Amplexus as I'm typing this. They go into amplexus at least once a month and it always lasts for 3 or 4 days to a week. So maybe one week on and 3 weeks off. The tank they're in is very humid. I'd say extremely humid. So that's what may be triggering it. I have 1.1 RETFs. They get a little darker when they're in amplexus for a few days and I used to worry that it was a strain on them going through that. So I make sure there is enough to eat in the tank when they separate, although they do eat while in Amplexus. They behave the same way whether they lay eggs or not. Mind you - there are a lot of plants in that tank so maybe sometimes I've failed to notice thier eggs?

To be quite honest with you I'm still unsure what stimulates them to go into amplexus. My feeling at this point is when they are well fed and "feeling good" it happens. Temperature is about 77 - 79 in the day and falls to about 72 at night. Humidity is steady around 85 - 90%. I have digital meters with sensors. Lighting is on from 6:45 to 21:30 - my lights simulate sunrise and sunset. (they don't just come on full and shut off suddenly)

Hope that helps.
