It's Pickerel frogs that have that toxin but they look very similar to leopard frogs. Green with slightly smaller and differently shapes spots. They're a bit smaller too.
If I'm not mistaken firebellies lose thier toxins when kept in aquariums? He didn't decompose in the tank though,.... I stripped it after that. I would have found him. It was pretty obvious because the leopard frog was fatter than when I left in the morning.
I caught my leopard frogs from the backriver here. Both frogs were the same size to start out but the leopard frog grew over winter.
That was totally my bad.... I didn't pay attention to the warning signs.
Edit: as far as hunting skills are concerned, I think any wild caught frog would probably out compete a tank kept frog. I've seen my frogs get a cricket in thier sights and jump right across a 4 ft tank to nail the cricket in mid air, off a leaf. So yeah way more agile/aggressive.
