Default reputation system

hey everyone im not sure if everyone is aware of this but there is a reputation points system on this thread if you look at a post and notice that there is a little green box in the upper right hand corner that says (enter name here) is on a distinguished road this is directly related to your reputation standing reputation points are given to a person by clicking on the scales of justice also in the upper right hand corner of their post and it will allow you to add a comment this comes in handy when you read a thread that had a post from someone that was helpful and you can let them know that it was helpful to you lets try and use thius system some more =)

If you go to your user CP, you can see the reputation you have received and read the comment that was left. You can't see WHO left the feedback though, this is to discourage payback for bad reputation, or people giving reputation just to thank someone for good reputation they have received.

What I still can't figure out is what the different colored boxes on the User CP mean that are next to the comments. I thought they would represent either good or bad feedback, but I have one bad comment and it has the same color as most of the good ones. One or two of them have a different color though.

Im not sure how it works on this site, other sites I am a member of have this system as well.If the box is grey it means the member who gave you the rep doesnt have high enough standing for it to give any points, other members who have lots of reps give more reps when they do it.Maybe that is how it works here as well.

ok you guys here is a write up on the rep system that came from a different forum that uses the same basic system as us although the rankings are different from them to us on the levels of rep but this is a wonderful basis for us to understand the rep system

What is the reputation system?

The reputation system is to be used to recognize the helpful input and contributions of your fellow bretheren. It involves leaving positive or negative feedback in the form of points for specific posts. For the most part this system has worked well to date - but it is still a "work in progress"

How do I use the reputation system?

When you come across a post you find especially helpful/harmful you can leave reputation feedback for the poster by clicking on the small set of scales in the upper right hand corner of their post. This brings up a dialogue box which allows you to select "I approve" or "I disapprove" and a small text field to enter a comment. You must enter a comment in the field provided.

The reputation system is not to be used for baseless or personal reasons. It should not be used "just because" or "tit-for-tat". This includes but is not limited to "fluffing" or "twinking" someone by awarding them points because they are your online buddy, because you both disagree with the same poster or anything equally shallow. On the flip side negative points should not be left merely because you disagree with someone, have any sort of personal rivalries or for any other vindictive reasons. Misuse of this system may result in being "neutered" either temporarily or permanently depending on the severity of the situation. If this occcurs you may be placed in a different usergroup that lacks the ability to use the reputation system at all regardless of your current status.

What happens when I get positive or negative rep points?

As certain levels of points are reached, more little green boxes are earned. (Or red if you're going the wrong way). Also, the text that appears when you mouse-over someone's reputation boxes will change.

POINTS..........MOUSE-OVER TEXT

-26 - * .............Is not long for this site
-11--25 ............Needs to learn some social skills
0--10 ...............Is rocking the boat
1-5 ..................Might want to think before posting
6-15 ................Is off to a great start
16-25 ...............Is learning and growing
26-50 ...............Is a face we're always glad to see
51-75 ...............Is a community asset
76-100 ..............Is doing things the right way
101-125 ............Is making friends and influencing people
126-150 ............Is a hellacious helpful herper
151-175 ............Is building a stronger community
176-200 ............Is a friend indeed
201-225 ............Is always seeking ways to help
226-250 ............Always has a helping hand
251-300 ............Is always there when you need them
301-350 ............Can't wait to help
351-400 ............Is someone we look up to
401-450 ............Is true blue
451-500 ............Is a hero to millions
501 + ................Sets an example for us all

Where do I find out what my reputation level is?

Everyone starts with 10 reputation points. You can view your reputation points and comments in the UserCP (look in the menu bar near the top of the site for this).

Red square - negative reputation
Green square - positive reputation
Grey square - no points +/- (user was unable to use the rep system - usually because they are still a grand new member)

All reputation "hits" should have a thread title next to them. Clicking this will take you to the specific post the reputation comment is referring to.

Can people see who left the reputation points?

No. In order to avoid unnecessary "paybacks" this information is not available.

Most people have one green box, but some have two or three. Why?

Everyone starts out with one green box. Every 100 points of rep earns another green box. And if the box is red instead of green, then the person has gone into negative reps.

Okay can we get the reputation system a little well more known?

I'm sick of having this red box, yes, I guess some people disagreed/thought of as rude, w/e, with some of my answers. But also I've given plenty of good advice that people have thanked me for, but haven't given reputation, seems a little unfair =/

So if theres anyway, I'd appreciate it if there was a better way to "advertise" this system.

Thanks =)

oh yes.

I got a comment but it didn't give any reputation points. Is there a way to leave comments and not give reputation points, or was this some type of "glitch"?

o yeh and the box next to the comment is just gray.

Well, unfortunately, since the rep system is not well used here, there are alot of people that don't give any points, and alot of people that don't give very many. Also, unless you are giving out points all the time, you can't give points to the same person more than once. Unfortunately, those that give alot of points also take alot of points, making it harder for the rep to go back up when people that give less are adding back to it. The best way to make that red box go away is to offer good advice and post regularly. Also, it isn't the best thing to (sortof) ask for points... It's ok though, I understand your frustration. I think I may PM Marty and see if we can get a site specific post written up about how our rep system works (it is basically like the one above, but from what I can tell, it isn't exactly the same).

When that happens, it is because the person adding (or taking from) you reputation does not have enough reputation to actually add or detract from yours. I have lots of comments that haven't given any points too. Just be patient, it will go back up.
