I have kept hissers on and off for years. This is how I keep my set up:
-a glass tank with a screen top
-a thin line of vaseline around the top (escape artists!)
-an undertank heating pad for warmer temps (especially for breeding)
red flaky bran as a substrate (this is a horse feed item, it smells good, the roaches eat it, it's cheap as heck, and it doesn't get all moldy and funky for a very long time)
-feed them whatever you want, they love carrots, bananas, apples, cake (long story), greens, cat food (they do well on some protein), I used to make my own "roach bites" with powdered milk, egg whites, vitamins, minerals, sugar, carrot and beet juice, etc...
-lots and lots of places to hide (egg CARTON and paper towel tubes work well)
-I have always noticed a real down turn in their reproduction during the cooler months
-I haven't noticed any need for supplemental humidity and I am Southern California
Hissers rule!
