I live in Gauteng South Africa (home of the FIFA 2010 world cup) and having been keeping varies herps for some 15 years, ranging from Chelonians, Lizards, Geckos, Snakes and Amphibians. The only thing I have never kept are crocodillia.
I have been trying to find some dendrobate fro some time now, but they are rarer than hen's teeth here in SA because they are listed as an alien invasive species (which is not even possible as we don't have the required climate condition to support the species), but still searching.
I have changed my focus to keeping and breeding indigenous South African amphibians and recently just got myself a young pair of rubber banded red frogs, a species that ranges throught sub-Saharan South Africa. I am picking up bits and pieces of the care and breeding of this species and basically keeping it similar to a dart frog with lower humidity. They are an extremely interesting species to be working with and would love to share some of my experiences with you all and also learn from you.
many thanks and looking forward to hearing some feedback.
Hey, Darryn, Welcome to the forum! Are you by any chance speaking of the Red-banded rubber frog, Phrynomerus bifasciatus? Or are your frogs something different? We'd love to see pics!
Yip, that is correct Phrynomantis bifasciatus. I will post some pics later today in the thread that I started on these (under frogs) and also give some feedback to what I have learnt in my one week of keeping them so far. Are these frogs available in the pet trade in the US?
Hey constrictor girl, good to see another familiar face/name. There's a gold mine of information here, I have been an incognito member for almost a year. Just checking it out, reading threads drooling over dart frogs and such.
ja lovely to see you here!!
I have decided to go all natural with my snakes and want to build really stunning vivs for them with plants and all sorts, people say ja but they will just break the plants etc, i think initially they will all be quite excited but then calm down and leave the folliage alone!! so i am learning a lot here and hopefully will have a lekke viv up and running soon as a test run. i think the froggie displays are stunning!!! are you also going to give it a bash?
I have 3 set ups that are semi natural. One for my bosc's monitor which is natural sand with old man's beard (plant) and the other 2 are using playpen sand and some bark chips. I then have 1 natural viv set up for frogs and another one in construction. Natural is the only way to go, its still will be in a lot of peoples nature to put in astro turf and newspaper but there's is a higher return of satisfaction in knowing you have created something beautiful.
I have one tank set up at the moment with no frogs in it, just plants and water feature and I love to just sit and watch the plants and observe how they have grown. It's just awesome!
Great stuff man!!
I am looking to start with my little spotted python, but dont want to go the mulsh route as i had a problem with mites from it. so where to begin?????
