For those of you in the USA check out ebay, I usually get a few Mantis egg cases every year to hang in my plants that I keep outside (each case can hatch several hundred nymphs). It's cool to have them out there, I usually see a few throughout the summer who never leave their hatching plants, once they get their wings (about September here) they're gone though, out looking for mantis booty!
I've never kept one in the house though, since I specialized in carnivorous plants in my terrariums. Those fancy flower mantids are beautiful, definately wouldn't want it outside to get snatched by a bird! Not sure what species of "garden mantids" I get off ebay. I just looked today and didn't see any listings for refrigerated egg cases, start checking next year about march for those of you interested.
Mantids generally live about 9 - 12 months or until the cold kills them off (if they're outside). Before mine fly off in the fall they can usually reach 4-5".
