My newt stays in the water almost exclusively... I have her paludarium set up so that she has almost the entire area of her 10 gallon as land, and then about 6 gallons of water underneath it. I guess you could call it a REALLY tall false bottom, lol... It isn't all that nice looking, but I have fish in there and everything. Let's see, what all do I have in there? The newt (rough skinned newt, don't know the scientific name off the top of my head), several baby guppies (she can eat them if she wants, it amuses me to breed the little guys), a couple of baby platys that I hope she doesn't eat (too small to go in the main aquarium yet), a ghost shrimp and a trumpet snail to eat tank waste, a chinese algae eater to keep the algae down (tons of it under the area that is not under the land portion) and a couple of tiny plants. The tank has been set up this way for a few months now, and she goes through periods where she only wants to be on land (usually a week or two at a time) and periods where she only climbs up behind the filter under the water so she can stick her head out to breathe. She swims alot, actually. I can't get her to come out and eat right now, in fact... I hope she is eating some of the guppies, because she wont take a worm like she used to... How long do they generally live? I've had her for about a year now, and I have no idea how old she was when I caught her, but she was fully grown. I think she might actually be a he, but I like to pretend I have at least one girl pet besides the dog and one of the cats.

i found my first newts (london UK) when i was looking for beetles in a woodland, ohh about 3-4 months ago-ish, they werw small then
total supprise but i nabbed some and put them in my insect tank
then i got another tank and made it part water part land, the ones in the insect tank seem to be doing better size wise
also the ones in the insect tank are much lighter in color than the ones in the water tank/land
saw the fattest one sheeding some skin today
