I am setting up a 12" cube exo- terra terrarium, and I'm wondering if any newts could be kept in such a small environment. Half of the bottom will be land, and half water that will be about 1.75 inches deep, but there is a false bottom so there is about 0.93375 gallons of water. There probably aren't any species, but if anyone knows of something, I'm all ears.
I have two firebelly newts in a 10 gal vivarium now since early summer this past year. It's half land, half water up to about 4 -5in., because my research showed they liked lots of water. After the first couple of days after putting them in, they discovered land and now refuse to go back in the water!! If you put them near it, their little legs start thrashing about like they can't stand to get their feet wet! They must go in sometime to eat!! I recently got a new one, and I don't think he's left the water yet! He's perfectly at home in it.!! So who knows what they'll do???
It's actually very interesting, because they have all dug themselves down in the dirt in the back of the tank right next to the back wall, under some branches. They are down now where it is wetter, and they'll pop their heads out to look at you, but I haven't seen them in actual water in months!
ive caught over 10000 newts in my day and NOT a one from the water. every newt i have ever put into a tank i have never seen go into the water. and as for blood worms thay can get messy lol, cut the block into quarters and find a very small flat item to place them on when thawed and feed as needed.
That is so interesting! All information I can find says that the fire belly newts are semi-aquatic, and most set their tanks up being water with a floating island or rocks. I guess if the little critters have a choice, they choose land! I don't even see ours go in the water to eat.
it seems thay are very very lazy, thay prefer. or at least in my exp, a water dish no deeper then there heads so thay can rest it on the lip and not have to tread water heh. I have tossed them into a deep dish and i swear i have seen them flip me off and crawl out fast
