snails... My newt doesn't ever eat that I see, but I know she was eating because she is still healthy. I haven't seen her eat since she went aquatic a few months ago. However, I got a couple of trumpet snails (they wont eat your plants, just tank waste and algae) for free from the pet store, and I do see her hunting for them occasionally, and from what I've heard, it is a favorite food for them. The snails reproduce quickly, so there are generally plenty of them to eat once you get them started. You can just throw them in the tank, and they should take off quickly. (I'm assuming you have a water portion.) Otherwise, you could try chopped earthworms, or black worms, or white worms. Common guppies seem to do well in my newt tank, and she obviously eats the fry (since they disappear regularly), so you might try adding some feeder guppies to the tank (quarantine first and get them healthy before offering as feeders). Buy a few tiny ones, and a male and female pair of breeding age, and put them in the tank, they will reproduce fairly quickly as well (though not as fast as the snails) and your newts will likely eat the fry. Hope that helps. I know this is an older post, so I hope your newt is still alive for you to apply the advice.
