Default Aquatic Plants?

Anyone use any plants in their water? Most viv's (including mine) are probably going to have pretty shallow water, but i am probably going to try for about 2/3 water in my viv, so whatever life I can get into the water without it being a mess would be great.

Anyone know anything about lillypads?any of them good for shallow water?

Yes i use amazon frogbits there really tiny like lilly pads i got from Aquaspot.com. They will do well in your water part of your viv and also clean your water. They need high to medium light. Alex

I use aquatic plants too. My tank isn't typical and has a lot of water, not just a water dish.

Nearly all lily's need almost full strength sunlight to live, and that would require very high-output lights. It isn't worth it. Dwarf lily's make decent specimens though.

Interestingly enough, after searching this site and others like it for several months, I've come across nearly every aquatic plant that can be grown emersed (which is most of them) in one tank or another. I find this ironic, since I really started vivariums to be able to grow plants that I couldn't grow in my planted aquariums.

Java fern will grow in shallow water, it will also grow out of the top of it. in fact it will grow just about anywhere as long as it's wet.
if your viv is over 12 inches in depth then you can get away with a lilly. but they put up lots of large leaves one of mine is currently filling the top of a 4 foot tank and has leaves which are about 6 inches across.

You can get a dwarf lily and through repeated trimming, conform it to the size that you want.
