I really, really, really, want to set up a colony. My husband wont let me and they freak me out, though, so I don't see it happening, ever. That sucks though, because I know they are such great feeders... But sooooooooo gross...

they dont fly they are poor climbers and are pretty stupid (i kocked over the tub once first thing they all did was run striaght back into the tub lol) whats not to like, ok a 4cm roach can be kinda freaky at first but now ive had my colony a while (nearing 6 months) i dont have any issues with them and they breed, by god they breed. i started with 100 adults, i now have (i would guess) nearing 500 lol most small ones.
and all my salamanders (except the long tailed sals which are too small) love and an my anoles will sometimes eat them too (but prefer crickets locusts and moths)

Thing is, I grew up in roach infested SC. Just about every house we've ever lived in had at least some roaches. I know they aren't the same, but still... Have you ever had a palmetto bug get tangled in your hair? While your screaming at someone to get it out, it's just scrabbling around getting more and more tangled and you can't do anything about it.... uuuuuuggggghhhhh, it's soooo gross!!!! And once when I was little, I woke up with a roach dangling it's nasty little feelers into my eyes as it was sitting on my nose.... eeeeeewewwwwwwwwweeeweweweweeeeeeewwwwwwwgrossssss sss.....
God, they freak me out so bad...
The best thing about WA is that it is mostly too cold for roaches.
June bugs are just as bad in my book... the only creature that sickens me. Those hooky little scrabbly legs are just WRONG.

I ALMOST bought a roach colony... Thank darc that someone snatched them up before me. I never would have forgiven myself, and my husband would have left me, lol...
Has anyone had any luck feeding these to frogs? I have a trio of White's Tree Frogs, and at least one of them is not a picky eater, the other two have only eaten crickets.
I have done extensive reading on roaches as feeders and noted several references to frogs. They relish the smaller sized nymphs. Most reptiles and "herps" really go crazy when you put in roaches. In facts roaches are recommended to get picky eaters to start eating. The roaches in Texas are not any of the roach species commonly used in feeder/breeder programs. These are tropicals that do not do well outside of their protected environment in the roach breeder box. They don't fly, don't climb, don't smell and have a great meat to shell ratio.
I am so happy with my dubia colony- feeding everything from hatchling crested geckos, leopard and gold dust day geckos to an adult horned frog and a waxy monkey frog.
