It's not that, it's physically giving the snake a mouse that bothers him. He won't even feed the dragon a cricket. It freaks him out I guess. He said as long as he doesn't have to feed it, it's fine.

well it looks like you got alot of recommendations as to what kind of snake but ultimately it will be up to you and exactly what kind of snake to get for beginning is all a matter of opinion myself i prefer BP's kings and corns not so much, I have... erm... had... a desert king but he happened to manage to get out of his tank and is now roaming around my house.. ill never find him cause he is a very reclusive snake i did however discover that he was apparently hungry because he managed to get into my Savannah monitors tank and well i had to look for something to replace my monitor...RIP dino...=(
today we went out and got a very pretty taxas blune spined lizard he is a kool lizard as i mentioned before a wonderful forum to ask questions on snakes is Ball-Pythons.net Forums - Powered by vBulletin they are alot of breeders and know snakes very very well if you have any questions ask them and they will surely be able to help ya out

Athen:
Yup, I joined that forum last night, haven't asked any questions yet though because I am reading. I'm really sorry to hear that your snake got loose and ate your monitor . Maybe you can make a scent trap to catch him next week when he'll be hungry again. What kind of latches were you using on his cage? Until you find him, I'd be sure to make sure that all of your other animals are secure! Use really long zip ties to make sure their lids are tight if you have to! Good luck catching him...

Jason:
That is a gorgeous snake

im gonna try the scent trap to get him but i will be leaving for a 2 month deployment here in a few days so it will be up to my Fiance to try to get him his cage was one of the kind that when you slide it closed there is a clip that catches it and holds it closed then to further try to secure it i had it sitting between beside my BP tank so that it couldnt be slid open unless you moved the BP tank but somehow he found a way to get enough space to get out =(
and the monitor was the only one that he could have gotten into cause i didnt use and securing latches on his tank because he was very small and his tank is about 20" tall so there is no way he could have gotten out but i didnt think about the kingsnake getting in there lol

Definitely an escape artist! That's good that everyone else is safe. I don't use clips on my cages, but I don't have anyone that will/can get out. I did use them on the frog tank actually... Even back when I kept the lid as the top instead of the front. My banana frog is a huge leaper, and very powerful, I bet he could easily lift a lid. My dragon can't get out because of the weight of the hood, so until he gets bigger, no problem there, and by then I'll have his custom built. The frogs wont need clips in the new vive because there is a door in the front rather than a lid. I still have to figure out exactly how I am going to hinge the lid though.

Good luck on your deployment... I bet it really stinks for your fiance. I hated it when my husband was deployed.

yeah and this deployment especially sux for a few reasons, one we just found out on fathers day that she is 1 month pregnant, 2 because im on shore duty and i got randomly drawn to be part of an army training mission where we will be camping out on the beach and even though its only training it still counts as a real world mission so ill be stuck out on the beach camping for 2 months about 10-15 miles away from home not being able to come home and to further make it worse i dont rly know when ill be leaving i was told anywhere from the 24th-the 1st and that we'd be back sometime in august.. *sigh* and on top of all of that i just got back to the states from 4 years over seas and was really hoping to be able to enjoy this summer with camping and going to lake havasu and stuff like that but unfortunately i have to leave right at the beginning of summer and be getting back at the end of summer bummer isnt it? lol oh well i still have the winter and snowboarding to look forward to =)

Congratulations about the baby! That does suck about the deployment though... Navy sucks with all it's bullshit.

i used to have a Grey Banded Kingsnake (which I think are endangered in the States now...)

anyway...he was lovely....grew to about 2'6", maintained a nice colouring, very docile and friendly...

snakes are great pets as was said above - no walking, very little in the way of cleaning out (maybe a bit of poo the day after they eat) and you can go on holiday without worrying!
