Hey beckdg, I know this is kind of an old thread, but is your boa a b.c.c. or b.c.i.? I know you told me in one of my threads that you had a b.c.c. but I thought columbian red-tails were b.c. imperator. Correct me if I'm wrong though. Maybe columbian boas are different than columbian red-tail boas? I assumed they were the same snake with people just shortening the name.

from what i understand columbians in the trade are usually b.c.i.. the breeder that sold him to me still had his parents of course and his mother was about 14' long. her head was HUGE. they used to use his daddy for vacationers to take pictures holding him on the boardwalk in wildwood nj and sell the pics back to them.

between the breeder selling him to me as a columbian b.c.c. and a lot of reading i have come to the conclusion it is right although i could have been led astray, but i doubt it. from what i understand b.c.i.'s rarely exceed the given lengths for their species. i also have read they will never get to the lengths that their b.c.c. counterparts have been recorded at. considering his mother was well above the given size of 12' for a female i'd still say he's a b.c.c..

no biggie, i would also like to add a couple more links and further clear some things up. i figured eventually i'd have to deal with this anyway as like i've stated so many times before there are MANY misconceptions with redtails.

Rio Bravo Reptiles: Columbian Boas
Rio Bravo Reptiles: True Red Tail Boas
columbian red tail boa - Reptile Forums UK

so as you can see not only are the locales where most "true bcc's" come from bordering and very close to columbia, but there is a small area in columbia where bcc's actually come from. since i've seen the entire litter with exception of i think 2 that were sold before i got there i can say without a doubt pj was one of the darkest in the litter, but his red was very bold as well as dark and i didn't want anything gawdy. there are also tell tale signs like the fact that i have friends that have b.c.i.'s and although they seem to grow at the same rate for a little while there's a huge difference at about age 1-2 yrs being the bci although it gets a little smaller usually at full size will be much larger than a bcc when young.

there seems to be a big stink about this in the hobby, but the truth is that even though over 90% of boas coming from columbia are bci there are bcc's down there, it's just where you look.

considering his color you cannot deny he's from columbia... considering his mothers size i'd say bcc is inevitable. i guess one could speculate that he may be a VERY dark suriname, but with the knowledge the kid had that bred him i doubt he'd be duped too easily. also being there was 90+ in the litter there is no question on the b.c.c.. regardless he is columbian as this is where his parents were obtained from whether it is an accurate description of species or not.

i hope that helps... i appreciate your interest and wanting to know the truth as so many just regurgitate what they've "heard" as gospel.

a glimpse at what could go wrong at feeding time... and other info.

Very good info there. I appreciate you helping me understand the difference. I bought the bci's from LLLReptile and they had them advertised as just Columbian Boas, but they also had others advertised as Red Tailed Boas. I'm glad they were honest in their advertising and I wasn't ripped off. I would love to have a true red tail some day. Thanks again for the info
