Default Rough Green Snake

Here is my Rough Green Snake...
I hatched him and 4 other babys from the eggs his mother laid.

I orginally bought just the mom at a local herp show we have here.
She was wild caught and the vendor said possibly gravid.
And boy was she! A week after getting her she laid 8 eggs! 5 out those 8 hatched. One hatchling did pass unfortnially. I ended up selling the other 3 and kept this one.

The mother however did not make it after she laid the eggs. I think it was due to intestinal parisites and the stress of being wild caught.

Anyways here is Slim the Rough Green Snake, He just went through a shed, so what better time for a photo shoot!

My better half gave me a hand with the photos since he is very hard to take pics of.

Hope you enjoyed these, Thanks,

Clay

To be honest I've never ever wanted to own a snake...BUT NOW I DO! What a perfect little guy you have there! Wicked color too.

How old is he and how big will he get?

I found this one while hiking in Central Arkansas (I was dove hunting... but didn't see a single dove so I went herp hunting : )

He was still all knotted up because I had been handling him (and he wasn't happy about it) :

They're pretty cool.

This guy hatched in july of 07. So almost 3 years old.

Rough Greens get about 2' long but not very thick. These are not in canada, however they're cousins Smooth Green Snake - Opheodrys vernalis can be found as north as canada.

The only problem with this species is they are hard to aclimate wild caught indiviuals.
And most of the time the ones you see in pet stores and at herp shows are WC and usualy harvest intestinal parasites and die shortly after the buyer brings them home.

If collecting from the wild I would suggest collecting a young speciman and treating them for parasites ASAP. ALSO before collecting from the wild, MAKE SURE you research your local and state laws about taking any species out of the wild.

The reason I've been so lucky with this one is because he and his sibblings were captive hatched.

Here are a few pics of his setup. No back ground but lots of plants.

They are purely insectivorous, I feed crickets as a staple... I have also fed Red Wigglers, small Tomatoe Horn Worms, Silk Worms, Meal Worms, and even Butter worms.

They are also dinural, unlike most snakes!!

I really wish someone would start captive breeding these guys!!!

Well, you'll have to get another and start breeding them yourself.

I've always wanted one of those guys. That's what I think of when I picture a snake in my head. They are absolutely gorgeous. You're a lucky fellow.

So yeah start breeding them then start selling them on the website here in the classified section, I'm sure lots of members would snatch one fast.
