i ****ing hate those things they creep the shyt outta me, they have a numbing venom so soldier in afgan and iraq will wake up in mornings with a like a chunk of their foot gone
My nephew and herping buddy served in Iraq at Al Assad. He returned a few months back from his third tour and in our conversations he did mention that they were agressive but basically harmless.
His next tour will be in Afghanastan and I cannot wait for his reports on the herpto fauna there.

Having spent many months (13 actually) in Afghanistan and Iraq, I can say that NO they don't get that big. BUT, they are some nasty buggers, and scare the crap out of me.. .We had a guy in our platoon that had some of his calf actually eaten off his leg while asleep... I will never, never, ever go near one of those... We used to shoot them as well.... Stomping on them rarely proved efficient..
I'm glad my hubby didn't go to Iraq when he was offered. He HATES spiders and creepy crawlies in general. I can chase him around with an earthworm and he'll actually run from me! You should see it when I chase him with something bigger and crawlier like a superworm, lol... It's so much fun... ::evil grin:: On that note, I think I would shoot them too, then light them on fire just to be certain.
I had a platoon sergeant who was clearing houses outside of Ramadi and ran into one. He said the first two Marines ran in the door and quickly ran back out saying something to the effect of having been challenged by a camel spider by the door. So they shot it.
I can't blame them; I'd hate dealing with one of those. I've heard some horrible personal accounts involving camel spiders.
I would shoot it too! No way in hell I'm getting close to that thing. One breaching shell to his torso and we have nothing to worry about. If it ate part of my calf, I would go hunting and kill alllll of them I could find lol
I have alot of respect for the creature because I was chased by one in Falluja once. It was only 3 inches long, but it didn't like me, so I ran. I hope it doesn't escape on you! That would be cool to see it eat.
I will never sleep with two eyes closed again after reading this thread I'm glad I live not far from the tundra how could you have that in your house.
I'm sure i seen one of those come out of someones chest on a move.
I'm going to buy some raid.

No disrespect, lowcountry, but unless that platoon member was heavily sedated, there is no way that could have happened. Solifugids possess NO VENOM -- that includes any mythical "anesthetic" or "novacaine." Had that soldier actually been bitten by one (let alone nibbled on) there is NO way he/she would have slept through it.
