Default My first attempt-bearded dragon cage

Alright well I ended up getting a bearded dragon from a friend I had not seen in YEARS and he had been living in a smallish tank so I wanted to do something nice for him and I had been seeing all these amazing cages that people had done on line so I decided with a LOT of help from a friend that this was what I was going to do! I posted this one fauna as well so this might be a repeat for some.
So this is what we have done so far:

Day One:
At the end of day one we ended up with a wonderful box made out of MDF with a wire and wood frame top with a light in it. We sealed the inside area of the MDF (the next day I added a second coat). The box is 42" long, 23" wide and 24" tall

I was really pleased with what we had done that first day but the hardest stuff was yet to come.

Day two (which was a few days later in the real world):
originaly we were going to use styrofoam but for some odd reason we ended up using wire hardwear cloth-ok I think now that this was a huge mistake because it just made things more difficult in the long run

Day Three:
My friend and I work different shifts (I work days and he works nights so when Im getting up at 7am he is just going to bed) and I was wanting to get the cage done a little faster so I was left alone with several cans or Great Stuff...um...lol well..lets just say that Im still wearing some of it.

Now after I took these photos and went out for Red Lobster, I finished the side with the wire showing and begand working on the underside of the cliffs. I also did a water test to see how well the MDF was sealed..it wasn't sealed all that great so since I plan on putting sand in there anyways and because it was on clearance for next to nother and I use them in my ferret cage to keep them from scratching like made-I put down some linolium tiles that will in the end be sealed and hopfuly help to keep any moisture from destorying the cage..perhaps that was overkill? sorry no photos of that part yet.

Day Four:
My friend finly got to see the mess I had made with the Great Stuff and found it very..well..lets say I found it amusing to watch his face when he saw it but he didn't find it as funny. I don't have photos because it is dark out now, but tonight we worked on cutting some of the Great Stuff and began sanding it down to prepair it for the next round.

Now as to the next round sorry needed a pick me up.
Ok moving along then. We still havn't put in the front of the cage yet because we want to finish as much of the dirty parts on the inside as possible. The plan is to sand and smooth out the great stuff, makeing it looking more natural and rock like. Next my friend really wants to just paint it but I think that with Baxter (thats my new 16 and a quarter inch male dragon) and his nails the Great Stuff will not stand up to well. I have looked at a TON more viv builds and it looks like a lot of people use grout or cement layered over the GS to make it stronger and more relistic and that looks really cool. I'm not an artist and it looks simple enough. And I have been reading a lot of different things about adding the cement or grout over the GS, some people seal it and some don't. I was planning on sealing the egdes around the GS at the very least but what does everyone think? I han't done this before and I don't want to mess it up any more then I already have.
I will post more photos tomorrow after I get off of work and finish sanding the GS.
Thanks before hand for any ideas, tips and what not.

i dont know about who your area is but i know where i am mites can tend to b a problem and mites love exposed wood.. i might want to consider sealing the wood at the top of the cage to prevent these lil pests from causing a problem... this looks really cool so far, and is alot like what i have going for my lil bearded dragon as well... hope i can get some pics up soon as well... as far as i can figure out the grout and non toxic sealant is the way to go... i know that grout is easy to work with and u can usually just mix it up and slop it on my hand, it can get messy but hey who doesnt enjoy a lil time spent playing in the mud ...

a few updated photos:

this was after some sanding and shapping of the GS-still need to add some more GS to the bottom

the front frame is NOT attacged yet so the GS can was holding it up so I cuold see what it would look like and make sure it fit right.
With luck I will be getting the cage almost done tomorrow. I plan on putting inthe rest of the GS and applying the first coat of grout or cement, attaching the front, putting in the U-runners or what ever they are called for the glass doors, getting the glass or plexiglass cut and fitted into the front, sealing the linolum tiles on the bottom and making up my mind if I want sand or repti-carpet.
A long list, I know!

ok so i didn't finish the cage today but am getting closer. I need to let the first coat of concrete dry.

To finish the bottom part of the fack rock background, we ended up using black styrofoam from a grill-it was much easer to work with and required far less wait time then Great Stuff.

I went to lowes and asked the guys there if they had grout that was NOT anti-microbial or anti-fungle..they pretty much looked at me like I was a crazy lady. so we ended up getting plain old stucco and added concrete/scucco dye to it to give it its nice coloring we tried to keep the first layer pretty thin, on the next layer we will fill in all the cracks and open spots.
We also cut the tracks for the plexiglass and just need to silicon the tracks into place. We tried to screw them into place but the screws were not flush enough to let the plexiglass move without being hindered.

Ok thats all for the moment.

and I thought mine was moving to slowly..that stinks. I made us get most of the framing done the first day. If I can get the second coat of concrete on it tomorrow, there is a chance that we might be done..with everything but the paitning on the outside which I keep forgetting about because it is only for looks.
and the other reason I have been trying to get this done quicly is because until it is finished, Baxter a 16.25in long bearded dragon is living in a way to tiny 29gallon tank and its totly not fair to him. He gets to go outside for a little while every day in a pen but its just not enough and he wants a bigger home and he wants it NOW.

hehe not really. the dog was barking at him and the cat was standing outside the screen patio looking at him like he was dinner..he was really not happy about that. he ALWAYS turns dark and then sometimes displays at my dog who is a 67lb brown mutt that loves lizards in the "they are on the menu" way.

We almost got done today but the silicon for the top door tracks is taking FOREVER to dry. So on Sunday we will install the doors, move the cage and let Baxter see his new digs
here is what we did today:

first had to prep the cage for the 2nd application of cement by putting down newspaper. the first layer did crack a little and thats becaues I think I mixed the cement to thin.

the second application came out really nice! I gave up "painting" the cement on and just started throwing it on and dumping it over everything. it was pretty fun and I ended up totaly covered in cement hehe. that photo was taken AFTER the dirty newspaper was removed.

then we put the bottom tracks on and used clamps and rocks to hold them tight while they dried.

after the bottom tracks were in place and not moving we placed the plexiglass in them to figure out how high to place the top tracks. The frame for the front of the cage is NOT on yet.
Well a few more days, we are going to let the cement dry, let the silicon on the top tracks dry and then on sunday move everything into place!! *I hope*
