Default fish and frogs?

My bf and I are planning a vivarium. Ultimately, we want tree frogs (we have been looking at some darts or maybe a clown), but we are wondering if anyone has any thoughts about keeping fish in one part of the tank with the frogs. We already keep fish, and weve been thinking that our 55 gal long would look pretty hot with some fish on one side and a froggy habi on the other. Sort of like a river bank in a rain forest...

i have never seen or done this before, but with careful planning i cant see why not.
there are a few things to think of....

1. you will have to have very good filtration to keep water clean, dont want your frogs soaking up any amonia, nitate, nitite ect

2. tree frogs are not great swimmers so water would have to go on a slow gradiant from shalow to deep, in the deep there should be rocks or wood breaking the water surface, so if they do get into trouble they can climb out and jump to safty.

3. what fish would you keep, dont want anything that may attack frog when he goes for water.

4. how tall is your tank, tree frogs like to climb and need height, however darts like space to move around at ground level.

5.frogs reales toxins through there skin(especially darts) so you would need to find away of stopping this killing the fish.

if you want fogs and fish there are a few species that are fully aquatic!

Hope this has helped

Thanks! Very helpful. Hadn't fully considered the frog swimming issue.
Our tank is aproximately 48" long x 21" high X 12" deep. We were thinking of archer fish which wouldnt really be able to hurt the frog, but arent so small that they could be injured themselves.
If we chose to have fish, we may completely close off the fish side to eliminate any contamination to either the frogs or the fish.

I don't want to step on anyone's toes here but PDFs are not good swimmers. That's an expensive animal to have drown. IMHO, It would be feaisble to mix certain tree frogs with fish, but it's a compromise on the frog habitat side and a compromise on the fish habitat side, at best. Meaning both habitats will be less than what they were had the entire enclosure been dedicated to either one.

PDFs are not poisonous in captivity so there shouldn't be a toxicity issue for the fish.

Aquapants, if you already keep fish then you're probably not a novice at this, but if you are new at frogs, then I would recommend keeping frogs alone first and see how that goes. When you know what to do with frogs and are familiar with keeping a species that you think could live comfortably over water, then at that time go ahead and mix.

Mixing species is not for beginners. If you need help and information, this is definitely the place where we can share what we know with you...

edit: oh yeah and I wanted to add... archer fish will knock frogs off branches overhanging water and compete for insects with frogs

And while that would be humorous in a chartoon, i would not laugh at the sight of a drowned froggie. Very good points. I think for simplicity sake we will stick to an all froggie habitat for now. They are going to be happy frogs with all that space to themselves!

knew they were not poisonous, but was not sure of the toxins they release through there body fluids.

always good to learn some thing new though, never kept darts before so can only go on what ive read.

would FBTs be easyer to use than tree frogs, i know FBTs are fairly good swimmers.

FBTs can be quite toxic in captivity, but I have seen them kept with fish. Ive seen them kept with gold fish and other cooler water fish. 80 degree water would not be good on the frogs so warmer water fish would not work. ive seen it done with guppies also, just keep in mind the frogs may eat some of the guppies from time to time. with disease prone fish like golds id be concerned about the frogs getting sick. It can be done just use caution not tot sacrifice animal health for mixed species fun.

I'm doing that in one of my tanks FBT's (a pair) with fish and I don't have issues. It's nice to see the frogs floating in the plants with the fish swimming under.

OOO, I like those guys! What kind of fish do you have? Plants? How do you filter the water? Any info you can give to this newbie will be appreciated!
