Default Woah...Big Mistake

So...i was thinking of getting some Red Eyed Tree Frogs

and i didn't make the newbie mistake of just buying them...i joined this forum, read up and all that

anyway...went to the local reptile shop today which has...EVERYTHING

no joke...

if you are in Essex (UK) go to Cold Blooded in Rainham...they have a f**king crocodile...huge snappping turtle....anaconda!

anyway...they have these tiny baby turtles....full grown they are about 4 inches...so cute....so now me and my brother are doing the Bart & Lisa "can we get a...."

then we saw the chameleons

anyway...i looked at the froggies, which are uber cute...gonna go back tomorrow, have a good talk to the guy and get the low down....

if anyone has any tips to first timers, im happy to let you pop my cherry :-)

what do they require in terms of food? mealworms? little crickets?

how often do i need to spray them...or is there a way of keeping the tank humid?

heat mat or heat lamp?

thanks all

James

hi there

im also in uk and have herd some good things about cold blooded, need to make a point of visiting myself.

Red eye tree frogs are not a beginer frog though as they are very delicate and not very forgiving to mistakes. have you kept any frogs before?

in my setup i have an eco earth substrate covered with a layer of dead leafs and repti bark, i have a large jungle wave heatmat stuck on 1 side and the other 2 are blacked out with fish tank backing paper. i have a u.v tube accros the top and replaced the ally mesh in the exo terra top with nylon mesh just as a precaution. my temp is around 73-76 through the day with a slight drop at night. i maintain my humidity at 75ish by spraying the viv twice a day and covering 1 mesh pannel with plastic. for decouration i have lots of vines acting as walkways, hanging plants, some bleached wood and a few rocks. i also have a water dish in the middle of the viv. i am currently setting up a new larger viv for them and will be using all live plants, for babies i found it much easyer to use fake plants as they are easyer to clean and cut down to fit smaller vivs.

any questions will be glad to try and help.

Dave

Hi Dave

thanks for the reply

Yes, i popped back down there today and the guy basically said the same...not a beginner frog...

i havn't kept frogs before so, after much oohing and ahhing have decided on a snake and then frogs / lizards in the future...snakes being quite simple to keep and equally rewarding pets

Cold Blooded is very good...ask for Paul, he was a great help today...nothing was too much bother...had lots of questions for him about things and he was great...plus they have an awsome selection....even freshwater turtles...about the sixe of an OLD 50pence piece...

anyway, nighty night

What type of snake? I love snakes. I have an anerythristic Corn Snake, a Ball Python, and a Pueblan Milk Snake.
