Clown questions

I was watching my clown tree frog just a little bit ago after lights out.I observed him doing his normal sliming up routine for the evening.Can anyone tell me about how this works for them and where does the fluid come from and what is normal.It looks very thick and was rather clumpy looking behind his head.
