Default New Substrate Question

Hey there;
I've had two red eye's for about two months now and am fairly meticulous about everything I use in regards to setup and humidity and such. Anyway I usually use just the Exo-Terra tropical soil as a top layer of substrate but lately I've put coco husk and repti-bark into the mix. I noticed that when catching crickets the frogs sometimes get a mouthful of bark, does this pass through easily? or are these poor guys going to have some impaction problems?

thanks
Tony

The bark will likely be an issue if they are getting any in their mouths. Since you have seen them eating it when going after a cricket, you need to remove it. That's why I like to use grass or some sort of ground cover in my vives. The coco husk should be fine, and the exo-terra soil should be fine, but if using bark, it needs to be too big to fit in the frogs mouth, or it needs to be removed. I use milled sphagnum peat moss in my vives, and I have never had any issues with it. It also does very well with my plants. It is a less expensive option than eco-earth, bed-a-beast, etc. I get a bag that lasts me over a year (I get bored with tanks fairly easily and redo them) for around 8 dollars. I recently got two bags at 50% off, so I have PLENTY for my rebuilds. I think a block of the expandable stuff from the pet store is between 8 and 12 dollars here, and it is MUCH less than what I get in the bag of peat moss.
